ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

The Academic Excellence program is designed to help maintain the grade point average (GPA) of NSBE students. Each semester the Academic Excellence Committee sponsor workshops geared toward the improvement of time management, career development, studying, and test taking skills. This past academic year, we also implemented a mentorship program with the chapter. The purpose of the program is to utilize relationships to motivate and challenge each other to raise GPA. This program encourages study group sessions and peer support in order to help NSBE members obtain academic success and a degree in engineering.

Study Breaks

Study breaks are designed to give students both a time and place to take a break from studying. Students are encouraged to drop by, have some refreshments, and talk with other classmates. Study breaks are designed to release some of the stress and anxiety that are felt during exam preparation.

Mentoring

One of the biggest advantages that members of NYU NSBE have is the benefit of knowing students, especially upperclassmen, within their field of study. NYU NSBE has developed a mentoring program in which upperclassmen and graduate students act as peer advisors for undergraduates. By sharing their knowledge of classes, graduation requirements, professors, and homework, they are able to help undergraduates avoid possible mistakes and keep them on the right track. These mentors - protégé relationships are expected to continue throughout the college years of an undergraduate, and to form a cycle in which former protégé give advice to current protégé and so on.

Study Sessions

In attendance at study sessions are students from various majors, high school students from our pre-college initiative program, and professors of NYU Tandon. Study sessions run throughout the semester to help students deal with anxiety before and during exams. Students also learn how to use quizzes and mock exams to help them prepare for upcoming tests.

Time Management Workshop

The Time Management Workshop is designed to show students how to use their time more efficiently. Participants are taught the skills necessary to balance academic work and extracurricular activities effectively. A facilitator shows students how to manage their time by using to-do lists, schedules, planners, long range calendars and several other tools. The workshop acts on the basis that in order to be a successful student and professional, you need to be able to plan well and know exactly what needs to be done and when it needs to be done. Students are also enlightened on the dangers of procrastination during this workshop.

PRE-COLLEGE INITIATIVE (PCI)

The Pre-College Initiative Program is designed to motivate and encourage youth to pursue an interest in the science and engineering majors. This program’s hands on approach of speaking and working directly with students ranging from middle school to high school develops and maintains their interest in science and engineering throughout their lives. During this academic year, NYU NSBE students have provided students in grades 6 - 12 with hands-on experiments and demonstrations from different engineering and science disciplines. General science applications provide in-depth experiences in mathematics, physics, biology, and chemistry. In addition, NYU NSBE has worked specifically with high school students to develop their leadership skills and help facilitate their transition into higher education.

CONFERENCES

Each semester, NSBE chapters attend conferences to discuss accomplishments, gauge progress in the long-range strategic plan both locally and nationally, and outline future objectives focused toward NSBE’s purpose. These conferences also give chapters an opportunity to make proposals on how to continue the process of improvement that makes NSBE successful as a whole, moving closer to the goal of preparing, retaining, and graduating a greater number of minority engineers. These conferences add to the social, professional, and leadership skills which members of NYU NSBE are known for.

Fall Zone Conference

The Fall Zone Conference is a day long conference hosted by NYU NSBE to connect all schools from the Metropolitan NYC and Long Island area together. NYU NSBE has been a proud host for the past 3 years and definitely plans to continue the journey. The conference features a career fair, academic/professional development workshops hosted by our amazing alumni, competitions, and workshops for our PCI chapters. Please reach out if you are interested in participating in the career fair or hosting a workshop at FZC.

National Convention

The National Convention is the highlight of the year for most NSBE members. It provides members with the opportunity to participate in extensive workshops that promote and teach personal and professional development and cultural awareness. The grand career fair enables future engineers to network with corporate representatives from all over the nation. Valuable contact can be made with corporate representatives, NSBE alumni, recruiters, graduate

school representatives, and students from other colleges. NYU NSBE’s goal is to take forty of our members who have displayed great leadership skills and academic achievements to the National Convention. This year the National Convention will be held in San Antonio, Texas from March 25 - 29, 2020.

Fall Regional Conference

The Fall Regional Conference creates an atmosphere of technical development, cultural awareness, and networking among NSBE members and professionals. Members learn more of the NSBE history and are encouraged to become active Zone, Regional and National members. This year the Fall Regional Conference will be from November 14-17, 2019. NYU NSBE is always strongly represented at this conference.

TECHNICAL EXCELLENCE

To prepare undergraduates for the corporate world that succeeds their academic career, NYU NSBE engages in many professional programs and activities. These activities include events such as development workshops, where students and corporate representatives share their experiences in areas such as resume writing and interviewing techniques. Alumni, professors and corporate representatives also speak to undergraduates about research and work opportunities, as well as give valuable corporate survival information to our members.

ALUMNI EXTENSION
CONTINUING THE LEGACY

The Alumni Extension program is a program that was developed to increase contact between NYU NSBE alumni and current members. The chapter’s goal is to create a strong database of alumni who would be willing to support members through workshops and mentoring programs. Through this program, several events activities are held that maintain and improve the relationship of NYU NSBE with its alumnus.

SPECIAL PROJECTS/
ENTREPRENEURSHIP

One of the most important responsibilities of any organization is preserving its history. Documents, awards, and pictures have been kept over time since 1979 when NYU NSBE, formally known as Poly NSBE, was chartered. In addition, NSBE paraphernalia such as flyers and newsletters are collected and preserved. This allows NSBE members to see what has been done in previous years and how we have successfully improved. Current members are instilled with knowledge of the successes and failures of the past that help the chapter work more efficiently at achieving success in the future.

MEMBERSHIP

This year we are bringing in a new committee called Special Projects/Entrepreneurship. As a chapter, we believe that the best way to apply skills is to work on projects outside the typical classroom environment. Through this new initiative, students have the opportunity to participate in a BLAC project working on solving world issues through engineering problem solving and partake in our first ever NYU NSBE Hackathon in Spring 2020. The abilities and skills developed by our members will be able to transcend on into the professional world.

NYU NSBE has grown significantly in terms of our active members. We went from starting with a small executive board to almost reaching our goal of 100 paid members for the 2019-2020 school year. Based on the 2018-2019 school year, our average number of members at our events was 30, with 200 attendees at our Black History Event. This year we plan to raise this number to a minimum of 40 and it starts with our member engagement events. We call these events “Link-Up Series,” which are social events used as a way for us to have fun together outside of engineering school and learn more about the impact of NSBE and why it’s one of the best student organizations to be apart of.
